Male Students at HBCUs

The following research study recruitment has been approved by the Shaw University Office of the Institutional Review Board.

The purpose of this qualitative research case design study will be to understand the factors affecting persistence among first-generation, 18-32-year-old Black male students who attended a community college in North Carolina no earlier than May 2021 and are now attending Shaw University.

This qualitative study involving a case-based approach will identify factors that affect persistence among first-generation, 18-32-year-old Black male students attending community college. A qualitative case study design is selected as it is effectively well-suited to better understand, in greater depth and description, factors affecting persistence for this participant group. A total of 15-20 students will be observed, interviewed, and invited to one 90-minute semi-structured focus group session and one semi-structured individual 30-90-minute session. Based on student accessibility, some interviews may be conducted in person, with others via video conferencing.
