Today we watch in utter horror as American citizens disgrace and storm the US Capitol. Shaw University unequivocally denounces this violence against human life and our democracy.
While we support peaceful protests, we affirm that these armed insurrectionists do not represent the values of most of the citizens of our country.
We acknowledge our nation is in crisis at this moment, and we look to God for help.
We believe in the strength of our American democracy and that the God of justice and human dignity will intervene to restore our nation.
This month in particular, we remember the life of Martin Luther King Jr., who once said, “Either we will learn to live together as brothers [and sisters] or perish as fools.”
Let us work together in the days ahead toward the beloved community in the pursuit of freedom, justice, and democracy.
We call all Americans to pray for civility and peace to prevail.
